2015 PSAT Registration

The PSAT’s will be given on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at NSHS at 7:30 A.M. This is a change from past years where the PSAT was administered on the weekend.  CollegeBoard dropped the Saturday test date for the 2015 PSAT session, but they are committed to returning it for 2016.  

Students may register online for the PSAT's here.  Registration will not be complete until payment is made in the Guidance office no later than Friday, October 2, 2015.  The cost is $20 and can be paid by cash or check.  Checks should be made payable to North Smithfield High School.

On the day of the test, students should bring a pen, two #2 pencils, and a calculator.  Upon payment, students will receive a PSAT booklet.  More information about the PSAT’s can be found at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10

Summer School 2016

The North Smithfield School Distirct offers many opportunities for students to remediate failed courses for credit over the summer. Registration materials for summer schools are attached to this post and also available at the high school along with information on virtual learning opportunities.  Summer School is not mandatory, but it may be beneficial in order to remain on track for promotion/graduation.  We have posted information on local summer schools at the bottom of this message.

 

NSHS Report Cards, Failure Letters, and Summer School Approval Forms will be mailed home on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 for students who should or need to attend summer school for credit recovery.  All other report cards will be mailed home later that week.  Students who choose the Virtual Summer School Option must have pre-approval from the Guidance Department before registering for any summer school course.

Expanded Learning Opportunity for Juniors in 2015-2016

Next year we are piloting a new program called Expanded Learning Opportunities.  The goal of this program is to offer students the opportunity to explore a self-directed, interest-driven topic of inquiry and receive course credit for their work.  Students will take this as an elective course and we will work as a school to establish criteria for this program.

 

Students will be partnered with mentors in the community who will serve as guides for their work.

 

We are looking for students who are self-directed, responsible and who have an interest in learning in a non-traditional way.

PARCC Testing Information

Every year, our students take a number of state assessments. We share the results of these assessments with you in order to give you an idea about the progress your child is making in school. We also use the results of these assessments to help us improve classroom instruction and to identify areas where students may need some extra support.

This year, we will introduce the new PARCC (or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments in mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA)/literacy. These assessments will replace the NECAP Mathematics, Reading, and Writing assessments that we have used for the past 9 years. Another change is that PARCC testing will have two separate testing periods: One in the early spring and another shortly before the end of the school year. For the PARCC ELA/Literacy tests, all students in grades 3 through 10 will participate. These tests will include both reading and writing in every grade. (Previously, we tested writing in only three grades.)

For the PARCC math tests, most students in grades 3 through 8 will take the mathematics test for their grade level. In high school, however, the test your child will take depends on course enrollment. High-school students will take either PARCC Algebra I or PARCC Geometry, depending on which course they’re taking. High-school students not taking either of these courses will not participate in the math assessments this year. Students in middle school enrolled in either Algebra1 or Geometry will take the PARCC test for their course, rather than the PARCC test for their grade level (for example, PARCC Geometry rather than PARCC Grade 8).

Another exciting change is that students will take PARCC assessments using a computer rather than using paper and pencil. Students will either be using the desktop computers in the computer labs or use chromebooks. We have ordered 14 chromebook carts for the district (30 chromebooks per cart.) A chromebook is similar to a laptop in look and feel, but it does not have the typical programs such as Word or Excel. It operates only using Google Apps and web based applications. We expect the chromebooks to be in the schools by February. The best thing about chromebooks is the simplicity of use. There is almost zero training needed as long as the user is familiar with Google Apps. Since PARCC is web-based, students will simply click on the icon and sign in to the assessment.

The testing windows are as follows:
Performance-Based Assessment (PBA): March 16 - April 10, 2015 End-of-Year/End-of-Course Assessment (EOY/EOC): May 4 - May 29, 2015.
