2018-2019 NSHS Course Registration

Dear Parents and Students,

It’s hard to believe that shortly the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year will end and we will embark on student registration for the 2018-2019 school year. Course Registration in Infinite Campus will open after Grade level assemblies in early February.

As you may already know, North Smithfield High School has been preparing for the upcoming year with the introduction of 15 new college/ career pathways.  Information regarding these pathways may be found on the high school website, the curriculum website, and the NSHS Course Registration website.

The course registration process is designed to give each student the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process with regard to his/her four-year academic program.  During the process, students are encouraged to engage in conversation with parents, school counselors, teachers, and department chairs with the goal of designing a robust course of study that fits the individual student’s needs and desires.  School counselors are a wonderful resource for parents to connect with during this process.  School counselors are able to answer questions about the course selection process, the NSHS Program of Studies, and NSHS Pathways.

NSHS policies and procedures have their own space on the NSHS Course Registration website detailing graduation requirements, promotion requirements, course change policy, advanced studies policy, GPA/Rank, and Credit Recovery.  It is important to note that courses will be offered pending sufficient enrollment and availability of staff. Students should make alternate requests in the event the selected class is not offered or does not fit into the schedule. Students can also access information on NSHS Pathways, course catalog, course distribution chart, departmental flowcharts, Senior English electives, Prepare RI, VHS, Advanced Course Network, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Prior to course registration, I would encourage all students to have a conversation with their families and make time to learn about job trends, the value of education and setting/attaining goals.  The links below are provided to help parents and students make educated decisions regarding scheduling and college & career planning.  It is strongly encouraged that students and families have conversations regarding future plans.

Grade level assemblies will be held at the beginning of February and all students will meet individually with a school counselor to discuss teacher recommendations, electives, pathways, and future plans. All students must select their elective choices in Infinite Campus no later than Sunday, February 25, 2018. Registration directions can be found on the NSHS Course Registration Site.

Sincerely,

Timothy McGee
